Lesson 8 – Discipline

A great tool for the successful person is discipline.  Discipline is something in this society that a lot of us lack.  I know when I was younger that I lacked much discipline.  Because of this I did not go to school right away to further my education, which is a path I chose, I partied too much and I hopped from job to job.

After years of being what I thought of unsuccessful I decided it was time to get my butt into gear.  One of the factors that caused me to decide to do things that I thought was successful was my divorce.  I know I have discussed this subject before.  To really be successful what would I need to be successful?

First I had to decide what I wanted in life to be so called successful.  I decided it was time to further my education.  I knew I loved business.  I do not like some business practices but in general the concept of business excited me.  My wife is always telling me how boring the stuff sounds but to me it meant a lot so she always has my back and loves to see me loving something.  Next I had to find out how I would best accomplish becoming educated.  I didn’t really have money and I always read that loans are a terrible way to go.

After contemplating for a while I decided the best course of action was to talk to an academic advisor from a school.  My mother had graduated and my mother and father were both going for their MBAs at the University of Phoenix.  So I went and made a plan with an advisor.  After I enrolled and started classes the next part of the discipline came.  That was to make a goal to make each and every class.

Once a goal has been made it is important to take action now.  The follow up to the action is the next moment that is important.  By going to each class I knew I would get the most from my education.  There was no doubt in my mind that by doing this it would help me absorb.  I learn best by doing something regardless of whether you are talking about education, martial arts, or any other form learning.  Following up the second step comes doing all of the assignments given to me.

The only way that I was going to get to my goal of educating myself academically was by holding true to discipline.  I could not waiver from my goal even a moment because I get distracted so easily.  I planned even with considering my disability of distraction.  Regardless if you have a learning disorder or any form of disease if you take it into account every step of the way you are accepting it.  The acceptance of a disability is another step in success by the way.

According to the Free Dictionary discipline is the, “Training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement,” (Free Online Dictionary, 2013).  This was the very first definition.  I thought it fitting for using it to really get to whatever is successful in your book.

I also wanted to mention I have just recently opened a new section to the site.  I have linked some of my different writings that I have published on Amazon if you would like to come and check any of them out in Writings.
